United Win SOS Global Peace Games

Maritzburg United U17 won the SOS Children’s Homes “Global Peace Games” that was played on the 26 and 27 September 2009 at the Bisley Park in Pietermaritzburg.

The event was played globally at all SOS Villages.

Coach Themba Dlamini’s United outfit over came stiff opposition, to finish top of their group. They beat, COFC, Italy, FC FEDO in the group stage and then went on beat COFC in the quater final 1-0 and accounted for Cosmos F.C. 1-0 for a place in the final.

In the final against O-Side they lifted the trophy after a nail biting 120 minutes of typical cup-tie football, winning eventually through a penalty shoot out 4-3.

“I was particularly pleased at the way the players performed at this tournament, more especially against teams that fielded very senior players” said Coach Themba.

"I think the technical and tactical level was the answer to this success and our conditioning was superior to every team. Both days were very hot, but the lads still played to form."

To cap an excellent week-end for the side, central defensive midfielder, Lungelo Mchunu walked away with the “Player of the Tournament “ award.

Head of the Youth Development, Katz Naidoo was full of praise for both coach and his players.

“I am very proud of this team to have performed admirably against much more senior players and to their coach for the excellent preparation and his tactical approach to each game. Well done to all”, said Katz.

“The future for looks bright for Lungelo and his award was well deserved. Keep working and stay humble, your time will come to don the United 1st team strip in the not too distant future”, added Katz.
