Two late goals sealed Maritzburg United's fate as they went down 3-1 to Kaizer Chiefs at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon
The score-line was a bit unkind on United’s who were very much in the game until the final 10 minutes of the match when AmaKhosi scored twice.
After the kick off, Maritzburg found themselves under a bit of early pressure as the likes of Nkosinathi Nhleko and Abia Nale posed problems.
With United on the back foot, Chiefs capitalised as they scored the opening goal of the match in the 33 rd minute, Nhleko side-footing home from the edge of the box after a scintillating run and cut-back from Nale.
But following the goal, the Team of Choice began to grow stronger and they grabbed the equaliser when a fantastic solo run by Musa Nyatama saw his ghosting straight through the centre of the Chiefs defence before showing great composure to slot past Ithumeleng Khune.
The home team had ended the first half strongly and in the second half they continued where they had left off – in fact United were desperately unlucky not to go ahead in the 63 rd minute when Rudolf Bester’s pile-driver of a left-footed shot struck the cross-bar.
But with nine minutes to go debutant Maritzburg keeper Shu-aib Walters was beaten at his near post as Jimmy Jambo netted from the tightest of angles.
Then with three minutes to go Maritzburg suffered a sucker punch when Nale showed a clean pair of heels as he burst through on goal and superbly lifted the ball past Walters.
