Middendorp Talks On The AmaKhosi Clash

7 September 2010

Coach Ernst Middendorp talks to maritzburgunited.co.za about the Team of Choice’s much-anticipated clash with Kaizer Chiefs at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

TICKET UPDATE: As of 10am Tuesday morning there are just 500 Grand Stand Tickets Left at our offices and 900 Open Stand Tickets available at Computicket.

Room for Improvement

“We need an improvement in the defence, we made too many mistakes against AmaZulu, individually, and as a compartment.

“I think there is a lot of room for improvement from each individual player. I know the players are capable of much more over 90 minutes than they showed against AmaZulu – here and there they showed touches, it but not in total over the whole game.

What to expect from Chiefs

“I saw Chiefs against Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 and also against Golden Arrows in Johannesburg.
They showed good movement with players like Tshabalala, Nale, Musona, Yende

“Chiefs not a one man show – we cannot focus only on individuals - we have to be well prepared in each and every position to have a chance.”

Big match temperament required

“The biggest issue that I have realised is that the players must not be over-motivated, have too much tension in themselves.

“The motivation will of course always be there for a home match when the tickets are sold out, the players feel the support from the crowd and that is good.

“But its very important that we come to the right level of tension – the players cannot have an over-packed tension on the body and that is something I have been working on.”

Match Info

-       Head-to-head stats suggest that there is little to choose between these two teams, who have met in eight league games since 2005/06.

-       Chiefs seem to have a slight edge, having claimed four wins to United’s three while outscoring the KwaZulu-Natal team 15 goals to seven.

-       Yet in home games for Maritzburg the record for each team reads P4 W2 L2, with Chiefs again having scored more goals: eight to five.

-       Last term, each side managed to win away from home against one another. The Team of Choice shocked Amakhosi 1-0 in Soweto, but the return game saw the Gauteng side claim a convincing 3-1 win.
