Palmer: now we are competing in the PSL again

10 May 2011

The relief around Pietermaritzburg on Saturday evening was tangible as Maritzburg United secured their Absa Premiership status with a 3-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns.

It’s been a long, hard campaign as the Team of Choice found themselves in and around the bottom four for nearly the entire campaign.

But with their backs up against the walls, the players dug deep when it reality mattered, beating championship contenders Sundowns 3-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium to ensure safety from the relegation battle.

It was indeed the team’s ability to tap in to their remarkable home support that saw the side picking up many valuable points – in fact United are unbeaten at the Harry Gwala Stadium for 2011.

Coach Ian Palmer was ecstatic that his players were able to pull off the result against a star-studded Downs side.

“It was a fantastic game, the players did what was expected and we created quite a few chances.

“The game-plan worked – to keep it compact and get them on the break, and it worked for us.

“It was very important for us – the game was like a six-pointer, now we are competing in the PSL again next season which is fantastic

“I think we should have scored quite a few more goals – they worked hard, very hard for this game,” said Palmer.

United will now be preparing for their final match of the season – on May 21 they face Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium.
