Shu-aib: Consistency is what we need

Maritzburg United captain Shu-aib Walters wants his side to fire on all cylinders from the outset, not just when the chips are down

The Team of Choice were back for pre-season training today (Monday), with the players being put through medical tests.

Walters says its important that this season the team gets off to a good start and does not only up their efforts when their hand is forced, as happened at the end of last season when they raised the tempo to end the season with a bang and avoid relegation.

“What we showed ourselves in the final weeks of last season is that he have the potential to be a good side, to beat any team on the day.

“We showed ourselves we have the ability and the man-power as we took 11 points from our last six games,” he told the MUFC website.

“We played well when we were a wounded animal, with our backs to the wall, but we need to ensure we play with that same intensity from game one this season.”

Walters continued: “Now we need to repeat that form from the outset of this season, if we can take 10 or 11 points from every six games, we can finish with over 50 points and in a good position.

“Perhaps we need to strategize a bit more for particular games – an away match to Sundowns is different to a game at home.”

While Walters credits coach Ian Palmer with coming in and turning things around, he says its ultimately up to the players to get the results.

“Ian did well to get us to gel, to get the team spirit back. But if you look at it, it’s the same players that played under Ernst Middendorp, in the same positions – its our responsibility to get the points.”
