Palmer believes youth is the way forward

There has been an important common denominator in Maritzburg United coach Ian Palmer’s off-season signings – youth.

Of the six or seven players signed, all are under 25-years old, with the majority 23 or younger.

These players however, are not rookies with little experience – the likes of Prince Olomu, Wayne Matle, Michael Morton and Morne Davids all have considerable experience at PSL, junior international and NFD level.

“We have looked to the national Under-23 side for talent, and have several players now who play at that or close to that level – Michael Morton, Chillies Madondo, JB Ncubeni, Wayne and the new left back, Thabang Ntuka, who was signed from United FC,” said Palmer.

“I expect all these players to do well for us in the season ahead. And I am definitely expecting to give more opportunities from the young players coming through.”

Apart from the new signings, United already have two players from the development ranks that have significant playing time in the Absa Premiership – Kulegani Madondo and Jabulani Ncubeni.

The likes of Renaldo Donnelly and Evans Rheece Evans are also looking to challenge for first team places, adding to Palmer’s options.

“A guy like Renaldo Donnelly, for example, has a lot to offer. He is however injured now and I have told the medical team to ensure he’s 100% first before coming back, we are not going to rush things and then lose him a month later, but when he’s ready, he and the other youngsters will be given the chance to show what they can do.

“Madondo has already established himself, while a player like JB has an enormous amount to offer the team.

“He (Ncubeni) did great last season – I remember him winning an important game towards the end of the season against Aces for us.

“He always does something when coming off the bench, but I want to change his mindset from a player who comes on for 20, 30 minutes, to one that is ready to start the game and play a whole 90 minutes.”
