Olomu here to build a brighter future

Nigerian midfielder Prince Olomu is set to play a pivotal role for the Team of Choice this season and is looking forward to life in the KZN capital.

A former African Champions League winner with Nigerian side Enyimba, Olomu has made a huge impression during his time in the PSL – first at Free State Stars and then at Bloemfontein Celtic.

Last season at Celtic was however not all plain-sailing for the Nigerian – a family issue back home disrupted his campaign and he was not as influential as he had previously been.

“I had a family problem which I had to return home for – my brother had passed away. Before then, I had been playing well, getting in the right places, but had been unlucky, seeing my shots hitting the upright, hitting the bar.

“In was away in Nigeria for a few weeks, but at that time it was a busy period in the league, with games on the weekend, games on Wednesdays. When I returned, I had missed seven or eight games, and with the team doing well it was hard for me to get back in.”

Playing just behind the strikers, or as a second striker, the 24-year-old’s knack of scoring goals will be a valuable asset to Maritzburg United.

His vision, creativity and clever touch should also assist in creating chances for the team’s other attack-minded players.

“I took the decision in the off-season that I needed a new environment where I could make a fresh start. I know Maritzburg struggled last season, but I believe they have the potential to be a very good side.

“They have some very good players, a great coach, and by the grace of God I hope to play my part in bringing success to the club.

“I’m looking forward to settling down here with my family (wife and two children) - we have just secured a flat. We are excited to be experiencing a new environment, with lovely weather, and a new culture,” said the player.

“It is definitely big scoop for the club as Prince is already an established player is PSL and we believe his best years are still ahead of him,” said the club’s Commercial Manager, Younus Kadodia.

“ Like Bester, Prince is also a goal scoring midfielder, albeit from the centre of the park. Prince adds a new dimension to our attacking force and with Sibisi and Felix Obada will form an exciting and potent trio.”
