“Hunger to achieve is what it’s all about”
20 September 2011

Five games played and United are sitting pretty in fifth spot. This is thanks to the appetite shown by the team’s young guns, says coach Ian Palmer.

Speaking to PSL.co.za after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Golden Arrows, thanks to goals from Felix Obada and Kurt Lentjies, Palmer says he was pleased with the Team of Choice’s performance against Abafana Bes’thende, once they found their rhythm.

“I think we had a slow start (against Arrows), the heat certainly had an effect on the players and we allowed them too much space in midfield. But once we isolated that (problem) and used our strength, we got into the swing of things. So I am very happy,” Palmer said.
The season of course still has a long way to go, with many twists and turns ahead for all 16 teams…but so far, so good, says the former Orlando Pirates striker:

“The team has set themselves goals and that is to reach the top eight “And this is how you get there. Slowly; game-by-game you get the results you want. Our goal is to be in the top eight.”
United’s off-season player recruitment policy was about bringing in young players, around the under-23 age group, players determined to make the mark on the league.

Added to the club’s contingent of home-grown stars, this initiative seems to be paying off as a young, vibrant team plays some attractive, and winning football.

“We have some good young players here who are hungry to achieve things and that’s what it’s all about. I think the players that we brought in had certain roles to play, which they came in and did."
