Preview: Black Leopards vs Maritzburg United
23 September 2011

It’s effectively a case of stepping into the unknown as the Team of Choice meet Black Leopards for the first time in four years, when they clash in Polokwane on Saturday.

Black Leopards v Maritzburg United

Absa Premiership, Round 6
Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane
Saturday 24 September 2011
15h00 kick-off

Match background

Black Leopards will look to bring Maritzburg United’s unbeaten record in the Absa Premiership to an end when the teams meet at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15h00.

Leopards showed terrific fighting spirit on the weekend to fight back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw at Platinum Stars, with former Free State Stars striker Kingston Nkhatha netting a second half brace.

Added to a win over Golden Arrows in late August, the result sees Lidoda Duvha placed 12 th on the log on four points. With coach Sunday Chidzambwa’s first priority being the consolidation of Leopards’ top flight status, one could say that it has been a satisfactory start to the season for the newly-promoted side.

However, they are just two points above the relegation zone (currently occupied by AmaZulu and Jomo Cosmos) and need to keep putting up displays such as the one that earned them a point at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium against Platinum Stars if they are to keep their heads above water.

To that end, Leopards must look to defeat Maritzburg United in Polokwane on Saturday, though the unbeaten Team of Choice will be no pushovers.

They are one of just two teams (the other being SuperSport United) who have yet to taste defeat in the league this season, and on the weekend they outclassed Golden Arrows to win 2-0 and climb to an impressive fifth on the standings.

There is little head-to-head history between the two teams, who have played one another in just four league games in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons. Leopards have claimed two wins, United one, and the remaining game was a 1-1 draw.

Their last top flight meeting was in the second half of the 2006/07 season and Lidoda Duvha claimed a narrow 1-0 home thanks to a goal from Myron Shongwe.
