'We need to stay calm' says Palmer
6 December 2011

Coach Ian Palmer has called for calm in the midst of Maritzburg United’s poor run of form.

Its been six games now without a win for the Team of Choice, following their 0-0 stalemate with AmaZulu on the weekend.

Palmer admits he is feeling the heat, but does not believe it is time to press the panic button.

“With the situation we’re in, there’s always going to be a little bit of extra pressure,” Palmer told PSL.co.za. “But you need to stay calm because there’s no point losing it.

“You have to fight the situation. I have confidence that things can be rectified.”

He points back to the 7-0 loss to SuperSport United as the moment United’s season took a turn for the worse, explaining that the defeat had a negative impact on the minds of his young team.

“I think the SuperSport game had a major impact on the youngsters. Remember that we are the youngest team in the league, so these boys never experienced something like that or losing five games on the trot, so it’s always going to be tough on these youngsters psychologically.

“The mood was excellent ahead of this game, so as soon as the confidence begins to pick up more, I’m sure we’ll turn the corner.”

The KZN derby at least provided a point, but Palmer was far from satisfied.

“This point won’t ease the situation because it’s not the maximum we were after. It’s a bit disappointing because if a team doesn’t take its chances, they don’t win games. So I’m not happy and I felt that with a little bit of luck, we could have sneaked it.”

This weekend there will be no PSL action due to the Telkom Knockout final.

United’s next game is at home to Jomo Cosmos on Saturday 17 December.
