Team of Choice in major treble signing
26 June 2012

Maritzburg United have boosted their options for the 2012/ 2013 season with the signing of three attack-minded players.

The trio are Delron Buckley, former Chiefs playmaker Mthokozisi Yende and Dutch-born Curacao international Orlando Smeekes.

Smeekes and Buckley are both on two year deals, while Yende is on a one year loan from Kaizer Chiefs with an option to purchase.

Buckley is back in South Africa after nearly two decades abroad, during which time he made 72 appearances for Bafana Bafana and scored 10 goals.

The 34-year-old winger-cum-striker enjoyed great success in the German Bundesliga and is well known to coach Ernst Middendorp, the pair having worked together at three previous clubs.

Yende joins from Chiefs, where he had limited game time after having shone in the colours of his previous club, Tuks.

A powerfully built player, he has the ability to make things happen from the middle of the park with his great skill and eye for the killer pass.

Smeekes will add to the options Middendorp has up front in the striking department.

“We’re very pleased with the signing of the three players, who we feel will add good value to the squad and all challenge for places in the starting XI,” said Commercial manager Younus Kadodia.

“They all bring good experience and will significantly bolster the coaches’ options in attack. We are confident withy these signings that we can build of the success of last season.”
