The former Bafana Bafana attacker is reunited with coach Ernst Middendorp, the pair has previously been together at Bochum and Arminia Bielefeld in Germany, and at Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta.
Back in his home province after 17-years in Europe, the 34-year-old is expected to play a key role. Not only will his goal scoring ability and prowess in attack be an asset on match day, but his knowledge and experience will play a key role in the development of United’s young brigade.
“It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life because one of the ideals, one of the things the coach said to me was to help the young players, to groom them for success and that’s my quality.
“Fitting into this team he told me what I have to do, what he expects from me, and I was surprised. At the end of the day I came to Maritzburg and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.
“I am happy to be home and looking forward to playing here. When they used to call me for the national team I never ever said no. I used to always want to come home and play,” said Buckely.
Coach Middendorp is excited about having three quality additions to his squad.
“The PSL gets stronger every season and that is why its important that we improve our squad. I’m very happy with the new signings in terms of their experience, in terms of them having good individual qualities.
“In terms of quality they are really on a higher level, and not only on the pitch, but they can also deliver a lot off the field for more professional touch, more professional attitude, which will rub off on the other players.”
Mthokozisi Yende will be looking to reignite his promising career after joining on a one year loan deal from Kaizer Chiefs, and is hoping to bring joy to the Team of Choice faithful.
“Its not about us as players but the team is for the fans, and we will try to make them and the chairman happy.”
International striker Orlando Smeekes is hopeful that he can play his part in a successful 2012/ 2013 campaign.
“Hopefully it’s a successful season, I’m not going to say how many goals I am going to score, but the important thing is that we have a successful year. Not only me, but the whole team.”
