MARITZBURG LEAVE PE EMPTY HANDED

Maritzburg United were on the receiving end of a 0-2 scoreline in an Absa Premiership clash with Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Second half goals from Tebogo Tloane and Andile Mbenyane took the home side to victory.

Chippa had the early chances as Kurt Lentjies headed over from close range following a Thabo Rakhale cross before Rakhale miscued a 10th minute volley.

Maritzburg could have scored first though - after Justice Figuareido whipped in a great cross in 24th minute, but from close range, Thabiso Kutumela failed to get a decisive touch on the ball.

The Chilli Boys had a couple of more opportunities befor the interval, but had to wait eigth minutes into the second half before they scored, Tloane smashing a left-footed shot from 30-yards out into the top corner.

The second goal came in the 63rd minute, when Mbenyane’s flick from a Lentjies corner, the ball deflected off defender Rushine De Reuck and into the net.

The Team of Choice were able to create a couple of half chances, but Chippa were on top of their game and it took a couple of excellent saves from goalkeeper Richard Ofori to keep out efforts from Boikanyo Komane, Lerato Manzini and Rakhale as the hosts went on to claim all three points.

Head coach Muhsin Ertugral and his men now turn their attention to next Sunday’s Nedbank Cup last 32 encounter away to Witbank Spurs.
