LATE MAJORO GOAL DOWNS MARITZBURG

Maritzburg United were forced to leave Johannesburg empty handed after Bidvest Wits substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro sealed a 79th minute winner in an Absa Premiership game on Friday night.

Maritzburg had some chances of their own and for most of the evenig they night did well to keep the Clever Boys at bay, with Team of Choice keeper Richard Ofori making some big saves - in what was head coach Eric Tinkler’s first match in charge.

After Gabadinho Mhango had missed an early lobbed effort, Ofori brilliantly tipped Deon Hotto’s free kick from out wide onto the post.

At the other end, Justice Figuareido was played in by Siphesihle Ndlovu, but his first-time shot was well saved by Darren Keet.

Both teams then had chances as Hotto went close when he dragged a 26th minute shot just wide before Keet reacted smartly to stop Simon Murray's header from a Figuareido corner going in for an own goal.

Just before half time Ofori did really well to prevent Brian Onyango’s clearance going into his own net, and he was at it again 10 minutes into the second half when he did outstandingly to move quickly off his line to steal the ball off the feet of Terrance Dzvukamanja.

The Team of Choice enjoyed a good period midway through the second half as Fortune Makaringe began to stamp his authority in midfield and he created a great chance for Mxolisi Kunene with 14 minutes to go, but the latter miscued his shot well wide.

It was to prove very costly as Wits took the lead moments later after Pelembe played in Majoro, who beat Ofori to the ball before finishing from an acute angle.

Majoro could have made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Rushine De Reuck was deemed to have handled the ball, but Ofori came up trumps with a great save.

It was not enough to change the outcome of the game however as the Students held on for the win which took them five points clear at the top of the table.
