Historically, Maritzburg have fared well against the team from the Free State capital, with 13 wins, 10 draws and four defeats.
In terms of recent form though there’s not much separating them – both clubs have taken four points from their last two league matches, and both teams are sitting in mid-table with 12 points from nine games.
Last time the two sides clashed was towards the end of the 2018/ 19 campaign, when the Team of Choice scored twice in the final 11 minutes to record a 2-1 victory.
At that point United were fighting to avoid relegation, and it was in no small part thanks to the massive support they received from the Harry Gwala stands that night, that the victory was achieved.
“When I arrived at the club in the second half of last season, we played Celtic at home,” Maritzburg United striker Judas Moseamedi recalled. “They were 1-0 up but we came back and won 2-1. So we have the upper hand on this one and are determined to collect the three points again.
“Every time when it’s a home game and it’s a Friday, the only thing we think about is celebrating the three points after the game, we’re not thinking of anything else besides that.
“I hope to see the supporters in their numbers - we will entertain the fans and collect the three points as usual,” Moseamedi added.
Earlier this week the Team of Choice held Orlando Pirates to a 0-0 draw in Soweto, which was their fourth clean sheet in a row in the league.
The challenge at present though is for United to offer more at the other end of the park.
“Our entries into the last third and converting our chances - it will benefit us if we convert our chances and add numbers into the opposition box,” Moseamedi responded when asked where the team can improve.
Maritzburg will be without long-term injury victim Phumlani Ntshangase as well as Kwanda Mngonyama, who was red-carded against Pirates.
Moseamedi though is confident about the depth of talent in the squad.
“We’re ready, we have a lot of quality players here. We have Kwanda suspended, but we still have quality players that can come in for the Celtic game and do the job and help us to collect three points.”
