IN TOUCH WITH: JETHREN BARR

13 April 2020

In this interview, Jethren reveals what he’s watching on Netflix, tells us about the night when Maritzburg played like a ‘league title-winning side’ and explains how he might have been flying planes rather than playing football…

In our lockdown feature series, Team of Choice goalkeeper Jethren Barr goes under the spotlight today.

Jethren joined the Team of Choice from Bidvest Wits in July 2017, although it was effectively a return ‘home’ for the Pinetown-born shot-stopper.

During his time with the Clever Boys, the former junior national team goalie set the record for being the youngest goalkeeper to play in the Premier Soccer League at just 17-years-old.

We put the following questions to the 24-year-old Barr:

MUFC: Where are you spending the lockdown?
Jethren Barr (JB): I'm in Durban with my family.

MUFC: How are you keeping busy?
JB: I'm keeping fit by doing the programs the club gives to us every day.

MUFC: How often do you speak to your teammates/ coach?
JB: I speak with the guys everyday on our group and the coach with regards to the gym program we all do at home.

MUFC: Who is the person you are most in contact with during the lockdown and how do you guys chat?
JB: I mostly speak to Costi (MUFC reserve team goalkeeper Constandino Christodoulou), we keep pushing each other.

MUFC: Have you ever imagined life without football? And what would you have done for a career had you not been a footballer?
JB: I’ve always wanted to play football, however if not football, I might have been a pilot.

MUFC: Are there any games/ movies/ series/ books that you can recommend?
JB: I’ve been watching Sunderland till I die on Netflix, as well as Rhythm and Flow.

MUFC:: Looking at the season so far, which was the most impressive result/ game for the team?
JB: I think the game against Stellenbosch FC at home - we played like a league-winning side that night and got a very comfortable result.

MUFC:What was the best goal scored by MUFC this season?
JB: Yusuf Jappie’s free kick against Polokwane was perfect.
