Ncobo had the difficult task of putting together almost three hundred matches in what will be a shortened season due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup that will be held in South Africa next year.

The League will kick off on 01 August 2009, with the traditional season opener, the Telkom Charity Cup.

MTN8 Last 8 matches will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, 04 and 05 August 2009, while the Absa Premiership officially kicks off on Friday, 07 August 2009, when defending Champions, SuperSport United travel to the Woodburn Stadium to take on Maritzburg United.

“This is a unique season for us as we will finish the Absa Premiership in late February next year,” commented Ncobo.

“In order for us to complete the season in time before the FIFA deadline, we had to play all the Absa Premiership matches first and our two premier Cup Competitions, the Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup will be played during March, April and May.”

“With our commitment to provide adequate preparatory time for Bafana Bafana, the League will also be in recess for the entire month of January when the national team will be on camp. We have also committed ourselves to releasing all selected players to join the national team from the 1 st of March 2010 right up to the commencement of the World Cup. This gives the national team a total period of more than 4 months to prepare for the World Cup. All this has led to the congested fixture list,” Ncobo explained.

Despite the challenges, Ncobo is confident that the season will run smoothly.

“Last season, we had some problems with the lack of playing facilities due to construction work and upgrading, but I’m pleased to announce that we will be utilizing new facilities like the Rand, Orlando and Dobsonville Stadium’s,” Ncobo added.
