NEW SIGNINGS ON THE WAY

10 July 2009

Maritzburg United coach Gordon Igesund is soon to announce a list of new signings for the season ahead.

It is believed that as many as 14 new players will be brought in to bolster the Team of Choice’s squad.

"I know what I need. We are busy negotiating with the players and clubs and by Monday I hope to announce my squad of 25 players for the new season," Igesund told Sapa.

Igesund has already signed defender Byrone Henricks from Wits. However, he has lost loan players such as Gary Goldstone, Sam Ndlovu, Fanyana Dhladhla and Tony Tsabedze.

Igesund admits that last season was tough, and is determined to do things differently this time around.

"I inherited eight players and had to buy 15 a couple of weeks before the start of last season. We had no pre-season training, our fitness levels were low and as a result we struggled.

"It was one of the toughest seasons I have had. But to the players' credit they showed character and managed to keep the club afloat. This season it will be a whole new ball game for me and the club. There is a new air of confidence and players will feel the benefits of having a full pre-season under their belts. We will be ready and well prepared. Losing players is sad but I want to finalise my squad by Monday in order that we can start focusing on the tough road ahead."

He is hoping for at least a top eight finish in the season ahead.

"A top eight finish would be good. We have ambitions and once I get the players I want then we will take it from there. One thing is for sure, we will not be fighting relegation. We have higher goals to fight for and I believe we can attain them."

United kick off the new season when they host defending champions SuperSport United at the Woodburn Stadium on August 7.
