Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Maritzburg United
27 September 2014

A debatable first half added time penalty gave Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Maritzburg started the game well and ensured that AmaKhosi were unable to threaten their goal in the opening half an hour.

There was also a chance for Mondli Cele (pictured right), who flashed a shot inches wide from outside of the box.

But with 30 minutes gone, Bernard Parker, George Maluleka and Mandla Masango found themselves three-on-one with United's last man in defence, John Painstil, who did superbly to block Maluleka's attempted pass.

The deadlock was broken two minutes into added time when Mandla Masango converted from the spot, following Abel Mabaso's challenge on Tsepo Masilela, which appeared to be a dubious-looking call from referee Phillip Tinyani.

Masilela came close to increasing Chiefs' lead, but his second half volley flashed wide while Maluleka went wide with a headed attempt.

United keeper Virgil Vries made two superb late saves, first from Masango and then from Parker, but United were unable to fight back and get the goal they needed to earn a draw.
