TEAM OF CHOICE SIGN FORMER BAFANA BAFANA PAIR
22 September 2020

In a double signing to be excited about, Maritzburg United are pleased to welcome Rowen Fernandez and Delron Buckley into our technical team.

Buckley will work as the first team assistant coach, while Fernandez will bring a wealth of experience to our our goalkeeping department.

The pair, who are both 42, have signed two-year contracts at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Springs-born Fernandez was a regular in the Bafana Bafana squad between 2004 and 2009 and enjoyed highly successful stints with Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs before signing for German Bundesliga team Arminia Bielefeld.

Upon his return to South Africa in 2011, he played for SuperSport United before closing out his career at former club Wits. He has previously worked at both Orlando Pirates and Highlands Park as goalkeeper coach.

KwaZulu-Natal-born Buckley, meanwhile, does not need much introduction to the Maritzburg supporters, following a spell as a player for the club between 2012 and 2014.

He had a distinguished career as an attacking midfielder, and also played for Arminia Bielefeld, as well as several other German clubs, including Borussia Dortmund.

He represented Bafana Bafana in 73 games and netted 10 goals for the South African national team, playing at the 1998 World Cup, the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 African Nations Cup.

Team of Choice Chairman Farook Kadodia is thrilled to have secured the services of Buckley and Fernandez.

"We would like to welcome Rowen and Delron to our club and to Pietermaritzburg. As players they both enjoyed immense experience, having played in Europe and for the senior national team, Bafana Bafana,” the Chairman said.

“As ambitious and energetic up-and-coming coaches, we are confident that their experience and coaching ability will be a big asset to our club. The two appointments were made in consultation with head coach Eric Tinkler and we expect that they will slot in seamlessly into our technical team."

Maritzburg are currently busy with pre-season training, awaiting the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to confirm next season's fixtures.
