TEAM OF CHOICE CLINICAL AGAINST CHIPPA

3 April 2021

It all came together for Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night as we came from a goal down to beat Chippa United 5-1 in a DStv Premiership encounter.

Thabiso Kutumela scored twice with Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Tebogo Tlolane and Jose Meza also getting in on the five-star act.

It had been Maritzburg who had made a bright start to the game, Hlongwane having several sniffs at goal, only for the Chilli Boys to take the lead against the run of play through Maloisane Mokhele's 28th minute goal.

Stung into action, Maritzburg came close through Kutumela's 29th minute effort which saw him receiving the ball on the edge of the box, beating two men and smashing a left foot shot just over.

There was though no denying the Team of Choice's on-form striker as Kutumela equalised in the 35th minute after controlling Hlongwane’s exquisite assist before deftly slotting the ball past the on-rushing keeper.

The goal had highlighted Kutumela's superb touch, and then three minutes later another facet of his game was on display as he scored brilliantly with a blistering half-volley after latching onto a headed clearance outside the Chippa box.

Maritzburg extended their lead to two goals five minutes into the second half when Tlolane played in Hlongwane, who finished expertly with a low curling shot in at the near post.

The visitors looked to try get back into the game and at the other end, Team of Choice keeper Marcel Engelhardt did brilliantly to make a double save to deny Chippa two minutes later.

United were close to another goal when Tlolane went clean in on goal and beat the keeper Ayanda Mtshali, only to have his goalbound effort cleared off the line by defender Gregory Damons.

Tlolane had his goal in the 80th minute however, as he curled in a right-footer at the near post after being played in by Meza.

It was Meza who added the fifth goal, six minutes later, with a spectacular volley, after Tlolane's initial volley had been blocked. There was also good work done by Judas Moseamedi in the build-up to the goal as the big man beat Mtshali to the ball and got in a great cross
