TEAM OF CHOICE END SEASON WITH DERBY DRAW

5 June 2021

Maritzburg United wrapped up the 2020/ 21 DStv Premiership campaign with a 0-0 draw against AmaZulu at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The point earned meant that the Team of Choice finished in 13th place on the DStv Premiership table.

It was a lively encounter despite the goal-less stalemate against Benni McCarthy's on-form Usuthu side.

United had the first chance of the day when Daylon Claasen's second minute volley was deflected out for a corner, while at the other end, Maritzburg keeper Marcel Engelhardt did well to rush off his line and save from Lehlohonolo Majoro six minutes later.

Engelhardt also denied Andre De Jong in the 20th minute before Ryan Rae went close for the hosts following a Thabiso Kutumela corner five minutes later.

There were half chances for Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Travis Graham before the interval in PMB, with Hlongwane also having a shot saved by AmaZulu keeper four minutes after the restart after Bandile Shandu had won possession.

The action continued at both ends as Kutumela came inches from scoring with a free kick while Engelhardt reacted quickly to deny De Jong once more.

There were more openings for the Midlands outfit but neither Shandu nor Graham were able to change the scoreline.

Speaking after the match, head coach Ernst Middendorp said:

“Huge compliment to the technical team to have secured our Premier League status. We had a clear game plan. Majority of the plan was compactness and we did that. We had two or three opportunities to score but couldn’t convert.”
