Despite dominating much of their TKO first round game against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night, Maritzburg United suffered a 1-0 defeat.
The Team of Choice dominated large portions of the match, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and controlling the tempo for most of the encounter.
But Maritzburg were unable to turn their dominance into clear-cut chances on goal, with Chiefs keeper Riyaad Pieterse not an overly busy man after having dealt with a couple of well-struck Ashley Hartog shots in the opening 35 minutes.
The only goal of a tight game came after 15 minutes, with Bernard Parker chesting the ball over the line after a cross across the box.
Maritzburg keeper Virgil Vries then made a couple of outstanding saves as AmaKhosi continued to have the better of the chances even though they were by no means dominating the game.
After the break, the KZN side again found themselves winning the midfield battle, but the final ball into the box failed to pick out teammates and on too many occasions harmless balls were played into the Chiefs box.
United were fortunate not to go 2-0 down when Kingston Nkhatha forced his way through on goal but dragged his shot wide with only Vries to beat.
In the end Chiefs were able to hang on for the win, although Marirzburg can take heart from a strong performance against a side that has now won all 12 of their games this season.
