KAIZER CHIEFS ENCOUNTER ENDS IN DEFEAT
22 December 2021

Maritzburg United gave a rousing second half performance at the FNB Stadium but still endured a 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiership match on Wednesday night.

The Team of Choice started the game full of purpose and had a good opportunity in the 10th minute when Lelethu Skelem threaded Amadou Soukouna through on goal, but there were no celebrations as the striker pulled his shot narrowly wide of the far post.

The two sides battled hard for supremacy after that, the next chance falling to the hosts in the 33rd minute when Khama Billiat pulled the trigger after a counter-attack, but he failed to find the target.

Chiefs took the lead soon after that however as Billiat swept home a cut-back from Njabulo Blom in the 36th minute.

Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya nearly scored another goal five minutes later when he fired a volley over the bar.

The second half saw the Team of Choice come charging out and they had Chiefs on the back-foot for much of the next 45 minutes.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane could have netted just a minute after the restart when he sneaked the ball off Daniel Cardoso, but his lob was saved by Daniel Akpeyi.

A number of brilliant balls into the box from Keagan Ritchie caused Amakhosi havoc and there were nearly own goals as Ramahlwe Mphahlele headed against his post and then Siyabonga Ngezana fired a volley just over the Chiefs net.

For all their efforts though, the KZN side could just prise open the Chiefs defence and the home side were to make sure of the result in the 80th minute when Billiat set up Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to curl the ball in from the edge of the box.

United kept fighting and almost pulled a goal back in the 90th minute with Daylon Claasen’s crisp strike, but he was denied by a brilliant Daniel Akpeyi save.
